Ghost Pines Merlot 2014
Wine EnthusiastSmoky oak supports a simple, supple texture of blackberry and tobacco in this likable wine from both counties, a good value for the quality and tailor-made for the table.
Wine SpectatorA solid Merlot, with a medium body and lively notes of currant, black tea and spice. Drink now through 2020. 18,000 cases made.
Wine AdvocateA real surprise was how good the 2014 Merlot turned out. This is a relatively large cuvée of 31,000 cases, made of 90% Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties. Most is sourced from Sonoma, with a mix of Napa fruit as well. It spent 18 months in used French oak and the wine exhibits exuberant black cherry and mocha-infused chocolaty fruit, excellent texture, good purity, a dark ruby/purple color and a big, fleshy, chunky mouthfeel. The wine is only 13.8% alcohol, but carries a nice plumpness. Drink it over the next 3-4 years.
